Beginner Guitar Lessons, Level 1 Book and DVD: Learn Songs the Quick, Simple, and Easy Way (Spiral-bound), I bought the first book and dvd from these guys and this one is even BETTER! I tried to learn guitar a few years ago, but the books and scales and theory were all too complicated. I have seen other how-to-play guitar videos, but this is by far the best. The play-along videos make it much easier to play songs. The method is by far the easiest way to get started and have fun.

If you know nothing about playing the guitar, this is the next best thing to live instruction. It starts from square one and will have you playing a few simple songs in a very short time. The split screen technique on the video is very effective, with two frames each showing a close-up of a hand, and a third frame showing the whole player. The book contains only 17 chords, which may sound like a lot if you’ve never played, but many popular songs need chords not covered in the book.
