Guides and Tips how to Install Guitar Pickup
Install Guitar Pickup
To install your guitar pickups really careful, do not make mischief in your favorite guitar. If you ask for anyone, it is difficult or not to install a guitar pickup, the answer is different, because the guitar is not the same characteristics. Many types of guitars like an electric guitar, acoustic guitars, electric guitar, and semi-electric guitar.
Well, I’ll help you to post main guides how to install guitar pickup.
Here for the step one:
- Loosen the strings but don’t remove them from the tuning pegs. When it’s loose enough, remove the neck mounting screws and carefully detach the neck from the body. On the other hand, if you’re going to put new strings anyway, then just remove the strings and don’t bother removing the neck.
- Remove the pickguard screws.
- Remove the stock pickups
- Remove the electrical cover which is on the back of guitar.
- Detach the stock pickups from the pickguard.
- To totally remove the stock pickups, look for the 3 lugs under the selector switch where the 3 stock pickups are connected. When found, de-solder the 3 “hot” wires from the stock pickups.
- Remove the solder from the hot and ground wires from the pickup that you will be replacing. Don’t forget where they were (you may need to draw a basic schematic) : the new pickup’s hot and ground will be connected here!
- Unless you want to try “fishing” wires through precisely drilled holes, taping a guide string or small gauge wire to the ends of the hot and ground will save you much frustration.
- Take out the two screws on either side of the old pickup. Now gently remove it, making sure you leave enough guide string on both sides.
- When you buy new pickups they come with a wiring diagram. Check the wiring diagram for the color coding of the new pickup. Usually the new Dimarzios have 5 wires with the following colors: red, green, black, white and a bare wire. Solder tips of the black and white wires together then wrap tightly with electrical tape and use this diagram to distinguish which color represents the hot and ground. Then tape them to the guide string. Be sure to pull from the back, or electrical side of the guitar.
- Once you have pulled through the new wires, solder them to their necessary places.
- Finally, secure the new pick up and replace the electrical cover.
- Congratulations! You have just installed your first replacement pickup.
Warnings
- A soldering pencil that is more than 50 watts is too hot for electrical applications. More importantly, the solder you use can have an overwhelming effect on the electrical connections. Make sure it has a rosin center or you must buy it separately. Furthermore, it must be electrical grade solder.
- Make sure everything is grounded. If not your guitar will produce a very loud noise!!
- Do NOT try to replace them alone, unless you accompanied by someone who knows a lot about electronics.
- There’s a chance that the hole for the pickups will be really small. Ask a technician about how to fit the string in, or you can try to use a drill and some penetration oil for the cables. Be careful because it’s extremely flammable!!!
Just a simple 13-step procedure plus “Congratulations step”
, you can do at home, but still be carefully.
